Scope and Contents: Muster in rolls are for the 1st-9th Infantry, 1st Cavalry, and Battery A Artillery of the Illinois volunteer regiments that served in the Spanish-American War. Muster rolls, arranged by company and regiment, include entries for each soldier's name; rank; age; birthplace; colors of eyes, hair, and complexion; height; marital status; occupation; name and address of nearest relative; date, place and length of enrollment; name of enrolling officer; residence and distance traveled to rendezvous point; occasional remarks on physical condition; and the soldier's enlistment oath and signature.
Also included is a separate roll of officers who were promoted after or absent during the original muster in. This roll gives each officer's name, age, rank, residence, and marital status; name and address of nearest relative; regiment number and name of commanding officer; muster date and term of enlistment; explanation of promotion or absence; officer's oath and signature; and the mustering officer's certification of the roll. Directives from the War Department concerning the status of individual soldiers occasionally are inserted in the rolls.
